At least 35 people have been confirmed dead after a tourist ferry capsized in Vietnam’s Ha Long Bay on July 19, with multiple passengers still unaccounted for as rescue operations continue. The incident, one of the deadliest in the UNESCO World Heritage site’s recent history, involved the Wonder Sea vessel carrying local families, including more than 20 children, on a sightseeing tour.
The accident occurred around 1:45PM near Đầu Gỗ Cave when a sudden thunderstorm struck the bay, bringing high winds, torrential rain, and hail. According to survivors, the storm arrived quickly and the boat overturned in less than a minute. Passengers and crew had little time to react as the vessel was swamped and flipped violently. Eleven people were pulled from the water; their accounts describe scenes of panic as water rapidly filled the boat, and passengers scrambled for exits. Among the survivors was a 14-year-old boy who sheltered for hours in an air pocket inside the submerged hull before being rescued by military personnel.
The Wonder Sea was carrying 48 Vietnamese tourists and five crew members. Local authorities have said that most passengers were families from Hanoi, highlighting the devastating impact on multiple households. At least eight children are among the confirmed victims.
Government Response and Investigation
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has directed an inter-agency response, ordering the Ministry of National Defence and the Ministry of Public Security to mobilize all available resources for search and rescue efforts. Deputy Prime Minister Trần Hồng Hà was dispatched to the site to coordinate operations on the ground. The Prime Minister’s office issued a statement expressing condolences to the victims’ families and mandated a swift, comprehensive investigation. Authorities are tasked with clarifying the causes, strictly handling any violations, and urgently reviewing maritime safety procedures to prevent similar disasters.
Rescue missions continued overnight and into the following day, with divers, navy forces, and local fishermen working against challenging conditions, including reduced visibility and choppy seas. The sunken vessel has been recovered, with teams focused on accounting for all missing passengers while tending to survivors and supporting the bereaved.
